Oh, It's Nice

One G-d No Masters

This week, I'm sitting with this piece of comic art by Rena Yehuda Newman, a Jewish comic artist I follow.

I learned this past year that during the time of kings, Jews's commitment to "one g-d" was part of an anti-empire orientation. There are a lot of ways to think about what God means, but in every definition, God is bigger than a king (even in the definitions that are approximately "God is a king" God is still outside of the typical human king and helps us hold onto a higher power than the narrow lens of empire.) One could even say that God is Singularly Limitless -- both literally and along the same lines of freedom that I wrote about in that post.

I am too tired tonight to write about what I think God is (I waited too late on Sunday to write this week's blog post lol) but honestly that's not really the point here. No matter what and how I think God is, this message has been bouncing around my mind since I saw it earlier today because Rena Yehuda Newman is perfectly capturing the way that holding onto something bigger than our individual selves separates us from the master because it makes us part of a whole. And a whole is a lot bigger than 1 or a few masters.
